Besides the Golden Gate, no other sight is as iconic to San Francisco as its cable cars and trolleys. San Francisco’s street railway system formed the backbone of the city as it grew in the latter half of the 19th century. Cable cars and trolleys, or streetcars, enabled many people to move throughout the city safely and quickly to go to jobs, for business and for pleasure.

Cable cars first made their appearance in San Francisco. In 1869, Andrew Hallidie witnessed a horse-drawn car accident. The damp, coastal climate of San Francisco created slick surfaces on its steep streets. This situation proved dangerous for the heavy horse-cars, which would slide backward. The accident Hallidie inspired him to use an invention his father had developed. That invention was the metal rope.

Both trolleys and cable cars run on steel rails. The cable car uses a cable under the carriage, between the rails. The trolley uses an electric poll that runs above it. Cable car and trolley lines still run in San Francisco today. A museum highlights the contribution of the city’s street rail system. Enthusiasts of any age can try a hand on a life-sized replica of a motorman’s platform as it was in 1911.

A trip to San Francisco would not be complete with spending some time on the cable cars. The bright red open aired cable cars can be seen taking locals and visitors up and down the beautiful hills of the city. You can catch it anywhere, but you might want to get on close to Pier 39 and ride to the top and back just to check everything out. Often it will be crowed and you will have to stand and hang on, but that is just part of the fun. It is possible to get off in several places if you want to stop and explore the area. Remember though, when you get off, you will have to get back on at some point in order to get home.

One of the favorite spots it will let you off is the cable car museum. The kids can learn some history and it is certainly worth a short stop. You will want to take some time and carefully enjoy the interesting things to see at the quant little stop. The children will gain a better understanding of what San Francisco and the cable cars are all about. Most people remark, it was one of the most interesting things they did while in the area.
Admission is free, but make sure you check on the hours they are open before you jump off the trolley, but of course you can always catch the next cable car so have some fun and take the time to explore the whole area. It is one of the best ways to spend a day in San Francisco.

The California Palace of The Legion of Honor, less formally known as The Legion of Honor, was built by sugar and thoroughbred horse breeding magnate, Aldolph Spreckels in 1924 as a gift for his wife. This outstanding structure was created in memory of California solders who paid the ultimate price for their country in World War I.

The entry way graced by a sculpting cast of Rodin’s ‘The Thinker’ leads to collections of art dating back 6000 years. Items can be traced from 4000 BC to 14 th century AD. The Ancient and European collection contains some 1400 extremely rare pieces. One of the highlights of this covers the period of Greek vase painting and includes ivory artifacts dating back to 7th century BC. Recently added to this collection is a Persian sculpture dating back to 400 BC.

Among the many paintings on permanent display are El Greco’s John The Baptist, painted in 1600 and Monet’s Waterlilies done in 1914.

Another area of The Legion of Honor is a graphic arts collection housed in the Achenbach Foundation for The Graphic Arts completed in 1948. This area is devoted to a collection of around 90,000 pieces including Japanese prints and Indian miniatures.

Here are a few of the areas you’ll want to check out on your trip this year…
The Mission District: This up and coming area is full of Latino culture and eclectic shops. When you’re done exploring here be sure to grab lunch or dinner at one of the Mission’s many new trendy restaurants but be sure to bring cash in case some of the more local joints don’t have credit card processing.
Russian Hill: Spend an afternoon roaming the hilly streets of Russian Hill and save some money on pricey events. Beautiful houses and streets here are worth a second look and you’ll feel totally ingrained in the San Fran way of life.
Fisherman’s Wharf: If you’re determined to get some tourism in head to the Fisherman’s Wharf area. Here you can get locally caught crab or steaming sourdough bread as well as amazing views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Asian Art Museum, located in San Francisco has artwork dating over 6,000 years ago. The Asian culture is on display through each of the Asian Art Museum’s collection of over 17,000 objects. This museum is the premier location to see beautiful work done by Asian artists throughout the ages.

These are some interesting items on display at the Asian Art Museum today.

Probably the most meaningful piece is the bronze Buddha. This was donated to the museum, along with about half of the other artwork adorning its halls, by the museum founder Avery Brundage. The bronze Buddha dates all the way back to 338 A.D., and is considered the oldest known Chinese Buddha sculpture in the world.

The museum also has painted scrolls from Japan, dating from 300 B.C.

Korean dynasties are represented as well, with the largest collection of stoneware from these dynasties outside of Korea. The dates of these items range from 57 B.C. to 935 A.D.

Thai ceramics are displayed along with a large collection of Thai paintings.

Indian stone sculptures done by ancient Buddhists and paintings and textiles from Sikh traditions are available to see as well.

There is so much more to see at this monument to Asian culture. Spend a day roaming the museum’s halls and learn about Asia’s rich history.

There is a wide variety of modern art types to investigate while at the museum. For example, there are different galleries that include paintings and sculptures, photography, media arts, as well as architecture and design. For people who enjoy photography, they are really going to love the selection at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. They have been collecting photographs since 1935 and have over 14,000 pieces in their collection.

Photography is not the only great type of art located here. There are also 7,000 different painting and sculptures from 1900 to present day. There are also a number of different art movements captures by these pieces, making it a great place to learn about art.

One of the best things about San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art is they are constantly rotating exhibits. This brings multiple fun exhibits into the museum at different times, and also gives people a reason to make multiple visits at different times.

If you enjoy wine tasting you know that one of the drawbacks to being able to fully enjoy the experience (as in: sampling wines without reciprocal fear of driving to the next destination while impaired), then you might want to consider the Napa Valley Wine Train. The train provides a relaxed three hour thirty-six mile round-trip journey between the historically quaint town of Napa through one of the world’s most famous wine valleys to the destination of picturesque St. Helena, and then back again.Dedicated to preserving a past way of life, the Napa Valley Wine Train is instrumental in maintaining and using historic rail cars that no longer exist on the American landscape.Guests can opt for either a freshly prepared lunch or dinner as they take in the lovely vineyard views and wineries all from the comfort of a 1915 1917 Pullman dining or lounge car, or a 1952 Vista Dome rail car all of which have been stunningly restored to original detail.Daily winery tours include the Valley First winery, Grgich Hills winery, Domaine Chandon winery, and Raymond and ZD winery as well as onboard wine tasting which encompass anywhere between 40 to 50 bottles of wine (available to taste) at any given time. Most guests enjoy the lunch train since they believe the valley is best viewed in daylight hours, but keep in mind, too, that the dinner train can be equally lovely as sunset descends upon the vineyards and night enters the train’s cars thereby allowing them to take on a beauty and romance all their own.Prices vary depending on season and event, so we suggest you check the website for pricing and reservations. And last, for those history and trivia buffs, the Napa Valley Railroad was built and operated by Samuel Brannan in 1864 as a tourist railroad to take visiting San Franciscans as they arrived by ferry in south Napa to his resort town of Calistoga.

If you’re not too worn out from all the day’s activities, then take a chance to experience the vibrant nightlife of San Francisco.Let out the dancer in you at one of the city’s hot new dance clubs. Chic upscale venues like Club 525 and Suite one8one attract patrons looking for impressive live entertainment and modern dcor with VIP specials for those willing to really shell it out.If you’re idea of a great night is listening to new, local bands, then get a feel for the city’s music scene at one of the many live venues around town. Visit the Rockit Room to hear some of the best up and coming talent from around the city and around the world. There’s plenty of room for dancing on the second floor, but if you’re looking for something a little more relaxed, pool tables, foosball, and board games make the lower level a great hangout. Another popular music venue is the Red Devil Lounge. A range of performers grace the stage here from new local artists to well known stars. We know not everyone enjoys an ear-drum busting, strobe-light flashing good time, and San Francisco has many quality, but more sedate sports bars, if a drink with friends while you watch the 49ers is your idea of a good night. Grab a drink, a meal, and the game at Jillian’s Billiards Club. Even if your team doesn’t come out on top, pull out your own win playing pool, bowling, or just one of the many video games. Union Square Sports Bar is another favorite amongst sports lovers.

As beautiful as the city and landscape of San Francisco is on the ground, imagine it from above. The Golden Gate Bridge from hundreds of feet in the air takes on a whole new look. Airship Ventures offer rides in a helium-filled airship, the Zeppelin NT. If terrifying thoughts of the Hindenburg are coming to mind, don’t worry, these technologically advanced vessels are completely safe. The Zeppelin is made by a company that creates NASA spacesuits, and it is supposed to be immune to even lightning. The Zeppelin sails around the city at about 1300 feet, maintaining a speed of 35 mph. Covered in windows, some of which even open, you are provided with an unparalleled view of the city. Costing 495 per person for a one hour flight makes this quite an expensive afternoon. One hour rides take off from Oakland North Field. If you really want to go for the full experience, a two hour flight will ring you up to 950 per person and will take off from Moffett Field. This obviously isn’t something we would recommend every time you’re in the area, but if you’re willing to shell out the dough, it’s a sight you won’t soon forget. Airship Ventures offers flights in various cities throughout the state, some of which are much less expensive. You can check the website for a calendar with a listing of flights. To make a reservation you can either call (650) 969-8100 or fill out an email form online. Airship Ventures also offers group flights and special event tours. When you’re done with the flight, stop by the nearby NASA Exploration Center, which after this expensive flight, is refreshingly free.
