Alcatraz: A Piece of History

Published by admin under historic sites

Amidst the beautiful weather and enchanting city of San Francisco lies a darker piece of American history on Alcatraz Island. Just 1.5 miles off the city’s coast, this island is home to the oldest functioning lighthouse on the west coast. But it is best known as the now-abandoned military prison. It was first used for this purpose during the Civil War and went on to serve as detention center following the war. The Native Americans’ goal of this occupation was to be given rights to use the land based on various treaties that they believed guaranteed their rights to these abandoned federal grounds. If you’re traveling to San Francisco in the summer, you’ll definitely need a jacket.
